A Short List of Webmaster Resources

Posted by Charity Lynn on February 1, 2009 in Web Design |

I was thinking earlier that one of the things that every webmaster needs is resources. I’m talking about places to go and find out things. Places to go if you get stuck. Sometimes it’s inspiration you need, sometimes it’s something that’s not working for some reason and you want to know why or need a fresh pair of eyes to look at it. So here is a short list of webmaster resources that you can use.

  • COLOURlovers is a great place to go if you’re needing inspiration for the color scheme for a website. If your client (or you) don’t have a specific scheme in mind, or literally all you know is you want "e;blue & white"e;, this is the place to go. You can look at palettes, download them for several different graphics programs, including Photoshop & Gimp, and even use the palettes to create patterns on the website. Plus there are forums you can go to for further assistance.
  • World Wide Web Consortium is the "e;governing body"e; so to speak when it comes to what is and is not valid coding as far as CSS & HTML/XHTML are concerned. If you or your client are demanding valid code, this is where you want to go to make sure it is.
  • W3 Schools is a great place to go if you need to learn about something or brush up on a skill. Learned JavaScript but haven’t used it for a while? Visit this site and brush up on your skills. Easy as clicking a couple of links!
  • Friends – if you have friends who do web design, and something isn’t looking right or working right, as them to look at your code. Sometimes, you just need a fresh pair of eyes to look at it. I often enlist my best friend to look for anything wrong and she does the same in return.

Another option is to search the web for web design forums and join up with them. There are plenty of them out there, in fact, I’ll search the web a bit and bring you links to a few of them, so you don’t have to search.

Resources are everywhere – so take a look around. You’ll be amazed at what you can find out there to use as a resource for your web design needs.
