Game Review: PetVille

Zynga has a lot of games that are played via apps on social networks such as MySpace and Facebook. Several of Zynga’s newer games are only available on Facebook, PetVille being one of the newest and being one of the “Facebook only” games.

In PetVille you create a little pet – you can customize what color, ears, mouth, etc the pet has and what gender your pet is. Each pet receives a house – 1 room to start, with 4 rooms that are unlockable. The 5th and 6th rooms must be purchased once the 4th room has been unlocked. The medium used to purchase these rooms is the coins that are readily available throughout the game.

Coins & “Love” are given for just about every task you do in the game. You can decorate the rooms of your house, visit your neighbors, clean their houses, clean your own house, bathe your pet, bathe your neighbors’ pets, etc. Cleaning your house or your neighbor’s house will get you coins for each item picked up, and at the very end, a Good Housekeeping bonus of coins & love. However, you must remain at your neighbor’s house until the coins and love are given, or else you will lose them. Also, if you happen to switch to another tab to do something else, your pet will get right up “in your face” when you come back.

Zynga has been doing well about introducing new items, making sure the gifts change periodically, and they have introduced challenges (such as dancing with 10 friends or picking up 10 dirty coffee cups) to keep things interesting.

One thing I love is that there is no type of currency on PetVille that requires you to shell out your own money. While you CAN purchase coins using real money, you do not have to. You get coins easily in PetVille and I’ve made a good amount of coins there without purchasing anything.

However, there is one glaring problem that I have found with PetVille, and in fact it is the same issue I find with all of Zynga’s games with the exception of Vampire Wars and Mafia Wars – lag. The game can move very quickly at times and can lag like crazy at others. I realize this is due to the server loads, but one would think that as popular as Zynga’s games are, they would have obtained more servers with more bandwidth to handle the number of people who play their apps.

Other than the lag issues, PetVille is a great game and I recommend it to anyone who likes to do interactive games.
