Zero-Tolerance? Come On!
Ok, I’m sorry but when I see things like this article I see red. This boy is being punished for using a 3-in-1 utensil that is for Cub and Boy Scouts, at school. Really? Yes it has a knife – but think about this – for one, the boy is SIX YEARS OLD. For another thing, he PULLED IT OUT AT LUNCH. Yeah, he’s looking to stab someone with that. All he’s trying to do is eat his lunch. Now he’s being told he has to spend 45 days or so in a “reform school” run by the school district.
Zero Tolerance policies will NOT stop kids from bringing weapons to school. Why? Because human beings inherently believe they will not be caught. We do things we know are against rules/policies/laws because we believe that we will not get caught. Really, if a kid is going to bring a knife to school to use as a weapon, it sure as heck isn’t going to have a fork and spoon attached to it as well. A kid is going to bring a weapon to school if he wants to, and he isn’t going to have a fork and spoon attached to it.
The age of the student and the time/place the student brings it out should also be taken into consideration. A kid is sitting at the lunch table, pulls out a 3-in-1 untensil and starts eating, it is highly unlikely that he is using it for a weapon. Also, how many six year olds YOU know would use a knife on someone? Get real.
