Wondering What To Do

Posted by Charity Lynn on February 10, 2009 in Blogging |

I’m currently wondering what to do. You see, lately, I’ve been trying to make some changes to a couple of my blogs. I’ve been trying to get those blogs into being about more or less specific subject matter. However, comments on those blogs are, at best, basically telling me that there isn’t any need for me to blog about those subjects, or, at worst, being condescending and toned in an “I am better than you” manner. At this point, it makes me wonder if I should even continue blogging.

I love to blog, however, frankly, I don’t like getting comments that say that the comment author did not see a need for me to post about my subject. Do you like to have people come to your blog and tell you that they did not see a need for you to post about a subject you posted about? No, you probably don’t. So why would you do that to someone else?

So right now, I’m trying to make a decision. I have a few options. I can disable all comments permanently on this blog. I can remove Disqus and require people to register in order to leave me comments. I can also stop blogging. I’d rather not stop blogging, but frankly, I’m not having any fun if I’m going to get comments about posts that basically tell me I shouldn’t be writing the posts. So I have a lot of thinking to do over the next couple of days about what I am going to do.

  • It depends: why are you blogging? Are you doing it because it helps you feel better (letting off steam, etc etc), or is it to be praised, have someone say "oh yeah, I feel exactly the same".

If it's the former: think about it. Do you care what other people have to say about that? No? Then close comments. Sure that won't stop anyone from criticizing you, but most people are too lazy to write up an entire blog about it.

If it's the second (I admit, to having a website because I wish to entertain my visitors... although I'm really slacking as of late): then rethink your attitude. If the majority of your visitors disagree with your content, and you want to have them like it, then obviously you need to change it.

At the end of the day it all depends on what you want from this website. There'll always be people who won't like it, find what you do boring. But then, it's the same way with anything you do.
  • I personally think that you should not let the opinions of others stop you from doing something that you obviously enjoy. :)
