Why Blog?

Posted by Charity Lynn on February 2, 2009 in Blogging |

A question that has become more and more prevalent around the internet the past couple of years is “why blog?” Many people blog to vent frustrations, keep a diary (albeit not a very private one) of their lives, or simply as a writing exercise. Others, however, blog for their livings. Now why on earth would someone want to actually go to the trouble of maintaining a blog for a living? Let’s look at a few factors here.

First, all you need is a computer and internet connection to get started. There are many free blogging services out there and you can pick one of them to get you started on your way. WordPress.com, Blogger, and Vox are a few just to get you started if you don’t have a blog of your own.

Now granted, hosting your blog on a free blogging service won’t take you too far. You’ll end up needing to get your own hosting and a domain name before you’ll really start to see any action as far as making a living at blogging. Domain names can be obtained from many places, GoDaddy being the best known among them. GoDaddy is also set up to host your website as well. With your own hosting, you’ll need to use something like WordPress from WordPress.org, Nucleus, or Movable Type as your blogging platform. Many hosts offer one click installation of blogging software, Nucleus & WordPress being the most likely choices you’ll have.

Once you’re set up though, just start blogging. Find things that you’re knowledgeable about and blog about them. Let people know you have a blog and see if you can get a reader base going. Sooner or later, you can start adding ads in your sidebars, paid reviews for companies, etc, and start making money.

Blogging has proven to be a relatively easy way to earn at least a little extra money, if not a living. I mean, you don’t need safety equipment to do it. You don’t have to drive to an office to do it. You just have to walk over and sit down at your computer.

Even if you aren’t looking to get paid for it, give blogging a try. See what happens. You might just like it.
