People are always commenting that they have dark circles around eyes, or that I have them around *my* eyes. If I do, I know why. It is because I don’t sleep. I never have.
The best remedy I know of to get rid of those dark circles is to get enough sleep. But for people like me, who have a hard time sleeping, that doesn’t always work so well. Especially when we have a doctor who insists that it is allergies or dietary concerns that are keeping me from sleeping as opposed to my just being wired differently.
The reason I say I am wired differently is because my mom told me I was this way even as an infant. She had a heck of a time getting me to sleep – it was easier during the day than at night for some reason – and if there was the slightest noise – the phone, the doorbell, the radio, the TV, or even conversation between the adults in the house – I would wake up instantly and be awake for hours without any sign of dozing off again. So you can imagine what a pain in the rear I must have been.
Unfortunately, while the bit about the noise has been outgrown, the urge to sleep when the sun is up instead of down has never left me. Even if I attempt to flip my sleep schedule so I sleep at night, not during the day, inevitably my body will toss me over so that I am awake for 24 or more hours straight before I am able to fall asleep again – and wouldn’t you know it, I’m sleeping during the day. And people wonder why I want a graveyard shift!
