I love Twitter. Really, I do. But right now, they have a very serious problem that they need to address and fix. The problem is this: each day thousands of Twitter users log in to their accounts to find themselves with new followers – and FOLLOWING those new followers back even though they did not actually click the follow button themselves. Some users have said it is because their account was hacked and that they just changed their password and it stopped.
Unfortunately, this is not the case for me. I have changed my password at least twice, I have unfollowed all the people I ended up auto-following, revoked all the 3rd party app permissions, etc and I still have the problem. Most of these people are spammers hawking everything from real estate (a big one that I get) to hair loss prevention. I had one that tweeted nothing but their get-rich-quick-on-the-net scheme affiliate links. All. Day. Long.
I went to Twitter’s help section, looked through the support listings. There is nothing there about it, no known issues, nothing. I can click to check existing support tickets but cannot submit a support ticket to Twitter. I don’t know about other users, but I want this issue fixed. On a good day I log in to find just one or two people that I have to unfollow/block/report for spam (like today). On normal day – 10-20 users I have to unfollow/block/report for spam. I even had one that I blocked at least 10 times before the blocking stuck.
I realize that I can just go to my following list and block/unfollow/report for spam the people I don’t want to follow who show up there. But that gets old. A much better idea would be for Twitter to fix the problem. Find the cause and fix it. I should not have to change my password every week – which doesn’t work anyways. I should not have to go to my following list every day and remove the people I don’t want to follow.
Twitter – you have a serious problem. You need to fix it before people, like myself, get fed up and stop using your services.
