Time for a New Doctor?
I am now seriously considering a new doctor. The reason for this comes from this Wikipedia article on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS. This is a condition with which I was diagnosed in October of 2006. To date, the only treatments that the doctor has given me is the metformin, due to my being obese. Due to TMI content, I’ll be posting the rest of this behind a cut. This is a lot of girly stuff, so if you are female and don’t want to read about someone else’s girly problems, don’t go past the cut. Guys, you’ll probably want to stay out too.
Ok, so here is the deal. That Wikipedia article and some others I’ve found on the internet indicate that even with PCOS having a tendency to cause the monthly period to be irregular or absent, it still needs to happen at least once every three months in order to avoid the risk of certain types of cancers and other issues. Mine show up once a year, twice if I’m luck. If they are not present at least once every three months, then hormone replacement therapy is warranted.
Hormone replacement therapy is also warranted if, like me, a PCOS patient has hirsutism (excess hair growth, usually on face, chest, and legs) to stop the male hormones from being so dominant in the patient’s system.
However, my doctor no matter how many times I ask about the hormone replacement therapy says I don’t need it and to just take the metformin. Well, the metformin didn’t do a damn thing but make me hungrier than a bear when it wakes up in the spring. Yes I lost a bit of weight on it, but apparently I’m losing weight now, without the metformin, so that’s a moot point. I want and need that hormone replacement therapy.
My question is, would you suggest a new general practice/family doctor for me, or should I just make an appointment at the local women’s health clinic and tell my family doctor that I am going to take my girly issues to a specialist in that area? Or should I stay with my current doctor for everything, find a way to print out the information I am finding on the internet about PCOS, and take it to him and show him that I have symptoms that need to be treated whether he likes it or not?
Yes, I am asking for discussion on this topic for the simple reason that while the decision will be ultimately mine, I’d like to see what others would do in the same situation to give me some background on what to do.
