One thing that a lot of people get caught up in when choosing what to blog about is “niche” blogs. Niche blogs are blogs that are written about one particular subject. Such as web design, blogging, seo, music, books, movies, even things like kids wagons might be a subject for a niche blogger, if they blog about toys.

The biggest problem with niche blogs is that when the author realizes they have more to talk about than just the normal subject of the blog, they wonder what to do. Some bloggers don’t want to start a whole new blog for what they feel will be just one post. If that’s the case for you, you could always put a note that the post in question is going to be “off topic” and then carry on from there. But if you find yourself making a lot of “off topic” posts, then it might be best to start looking at creating a second blog.

There is nothing wrong with having more than one blog! Many people do so. There is also nothing wrong with having a “mixed bag” type of blog where you might talk about anything and everything under the sun. You do not have to stick with just one blog and you do not have to stick to just one topic on a blog. Just make sure that stick to the topic you originally started the blog on. In other words, don’t turn your tech blog into personal or mixed bag blog after 200 posts of nothing but tech. You’re not likely to keep many readers that way.

Your best bet when it comes to niche blogging is to plan out what you want your blog to do. If you think there’s even a possibility that you might want or need to blog about something outside the niche, create a second blog, even if one is a self-hosted WordPress blog on a domain name you purchased and the other is on WordPress.com or Blogger. Have your game plan thought out before you start, and you won’t have any trouble keeping your blogs the way you want them.
