I’d Love To
I would dearly love to do freelance work, but honestly, I am not entirely sure I am up to par for that. I mean, I don’t have a degree in anything. And I mean anything. I tried to take some correspondence courses for web design, but quickly got bored with them as they started out with basics I’ve known for 10 years now. I guess I’ve just gotten to the point that HTML is something I know a bit too much about. LOL At least the basics of it. I’d love to take classes in PHP, JavaScript, and things like that, but though our local college offers web design as it’s own course now, I can’t afford to go to school there! One class alone runs over $200 without books and frankly, I’d like to be able to get my education before that. LOL
I suppose I could look around online for places that offer free classes/tutorials in JavaScript, PHP, DHTML, XML, etc, but frankly, prospective employers are going to be looking for that degree and if they don’t find it, they’re not going to want to hire me. *sigh* Maybe if I get some more skills and show them off a bit (not to be a show off, but you know – show that I know what I’m doing) I might be able to get a few clients without actually having a degree.
That’s one thing that sticks in my craw – businesses requiring you to have a degree – a piece of paper you paid umpteen thousands of dollars for and spent way too much of your precious time in class/online/studying for – to say you know what you’re doing, when truthfully, I’ve seen people with degrees that don’t know anymore about what they’re doing than I do. Heck, I’ve even fixed things on computers that the IT guys at work, who have degrees in IT, couldn’t figure out how to fix. So yeah. Sometimes, while the degree is nice, I really don’t think it’s necessary.
