Beware of Free ‘Net Access

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

A lot of places are offering customers/visitors free internet access now. And if it’s free wireless internet, it’s all good. You can bring your own computer and surf pretty much wherever you want without fear of not being able to access your website you want to visit. But if you’re using a computer that is offering free internet access at a hospital, beware. A local hospital where I live offers it’s patients and visitors computers they can access the internet on for free. There is just one catch. Anything except Google itself, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, and AOL mail are blocked by the hospital’s filtering software because the sites are not in keeping with the missions, beliefs, and morals of the hospital.

That’s all well and good except for one problem. They gave us Google and said we could search for information on the internet. And we can search. But any links we click on give us the “this site has been blocked” page. So why bother? A friend of mine tried to search for baby bedding so that she could see what was available for another friend who is pregnant, and even that wasn’t allowed.

Patients or visitors wanting to update their blogs cannot access WordPress.com, Blogger, LiveJournal, DeadJournal, Vox, TypePad, MySpace, or any other place that offers blogs. Honestly, not a great idea if you ask me.

That was just an example. Libraries often have filtering software as well, so it is highly possible you’ll be unable to access what you are looking for. If at all possible, try to have your own computer to use at these places and take advantage of free WiFi internet. You’ll be glad you did.
