I have been Quiet

26 Feb

I realize that over the past few days, I’ve been rather quiet. I got my tax check on Monday, a full 4 days before it was even supposed to have been mailed. o_O Oh well, it gave me $600 which was used to purchase a new laptop for myself. Unfortunately, I did not have enough to buy the laptop and some new office furniture, but at least I got the new laptop. Now the old one (which was way more expensive and not as good a laptop as this one) can go back to the rental place, as I’m tired of dealing with them.

In any case, I apologize that I have been so quiet and I promise I will have more posts to offer soon.

Looking for a Theme?

If you have a wordpress blog and you are looking for a good theme, things can get frustrating. If you don’t have the time, resources, or knowledge to create your own theme you need to find one that works. Sometimes you’ll find one that works, but that needs customization in order to be usable for your blog. Other times, you find a theme that will work perfect for your as is, but it’s pricey and you just don’t have the budget for that. Well, look no further. You can get wordpress themes for free, not just at the wordpress website, but also by going to other places around the web, such as Free Theme Layouts.

At these sites you can find hundreds of quality, professional themes that rival the pricey themes for free. You’ll want to check these resources out as they can save you a lot of time, money, and hassle when choosing a theme.

Using an HTML Editor

22 Feb

One way to make it easier for beginners to learn HTML is to use an HTML editor. While some editors may have a tendency to add code that is not strictly necessary, an HTML editor can, nonetheless, be a good way to learn how to code HTML. There are many HTML editors out there, some are free, others require that you purchase them in order to get the full version of the html editor software.

Recently I took the time to check out an HTML editor or two and found one that I really liked. It was called First Page by Evrsoft. Frankly, this one is great. The editor allows you to choose what type of page you want – blank, HTML 4.01 Strict/Transitional, XHTML 1.0 Strict/Transitionl, even CSS, XHTML 1.1, etc. The software even has dynamic pages and legal forms you can use to assist you in building the website of your dreams. I have to say that this particular software is definitely something that beginners and advanced webmasters alike will enjoy.

Plus, the website that goes to this particular website builder is chock full of webmaster tools, articles for developers, guides, and other great information. It’s definitely a site to check out and a software to look into for your website needs.

Giving Your Blog a Theme

22 Feb

One of the fun things about blogging is that you get to give your blog a theme. Whether you’ve picked what you’ll be writing about and need a graphic theme (aka layout) for your blog, or you need a topic you’re going to blog about, giving your blog a theme can be great fun. A lot of times, the topic of your blog is going to affect the theme your blog has.

WordPress is the platform that uses themes for the most part, although you can change layouts/themes on Blogger, LiveJournal etc as well. If you happen to use Nucleus, that also allows you to use themes although theirs are different from WordPress themes. Basically the theme is the graphic interface of the blog – the graphics and colors that visitors see when the visit your blog. The theme can be a big part of what makes people come back. Interesting themes, changed often, but not too often can bring visitors back. On the flip side, your content should be the real reason people are coming back, but we’ll talk about that later. Some people like to put up one theme and not change from that theme, feeling that the theme helps “build the brand” of their blog. This is fine as well. It is definitely the preference of the blogger. )

Now for a quick example of choosing a theme. Let’s say your blog is about sleep. You love sleep and you want to promote it, talk about it, etc. You might choose a theme featuring the sleep number bed or you might create a theme that shows a sleeping person or a bed on it. You might simply choose a non-graphic theme in soothing colors meant to enhance your feeling of tiredness/sleepyness. It’s up to you. But if at all possible, your theme should be able to reflect your blog’s niche. )

Wondering What To Do

10 Feb

I’m currently wondering what to do. You see, lately, I’ve been trying to make some changes to a couple of my blogs. I’ve been trying to get those blogs into being about more or less specific subject matter. However, comments on those blogs are, at best, basically telling me that there isn’t any need for me to blog about those subjects, or, at worst, being condescending and toned in an “I am better than you” manner. At this point, it makes me wonder if I should even continue blogging.

I love to blog, however, frankly, I don’t like getting comments that say that the comment author did not see a need for me to post about my subject. Do you like to have people come to your blog and tell you that they did not see a need for you to post about a subject you posted about? No, you probably don’t. So why would you do that to someone else?

So right now, I’m trying to make a decision. I have a few options. I can disable all comments permanently on this blog. I can remove Disqus and require people to register in order to leave me comments. I can also stop blogging. I’d rather not stop blogging, but frankly, I’m not having any fun if I’m going to get comments about posts that basically tell me I shouldn’t be writing the posts. So I have a lot of thinking to do over the next couple of days about what I am going to do.
